EMPEDOFLEX supports the development of flexible Positive Energy Districts by integrating innovative energy technologies, digital tools and collaborative approaches across European pilot contexts.
The project
Like the philosopher Empedocles built his cosmogony on the four classical elements, EMPEDOFLEX rests on four objectives:

AI & data intelligence
Ai and machine learning tools transform raw energy data into forecasts of production, demand and flexibility potential across Positive Energy Districts.

Long-term PED strategies
Tools for sizing investments and exploring business models that make Positive Energy Districts a solid, adaptable long-term choice.

Short-term flexibility services
Services that respond in real time to market signals and user needs, coordinating demand-response flexibility at building and district level.

Seamless interoperability
A toolbox designed to integrate smoothly with existing ICT platforms, connecting buildings, energy networks and markets.
Validation sites

Comunità Energetica di Città Studi
The Italian site is located in Milan’s Città Studi district, centered around the Renewable Energy Community established in 2024.

Tamarinden Energy Community
Tamarinden Energy Community in Örebro, Sweden, is a pioneering smart district developed to demonstrate how local energy systems can drive Sweden’s energy transition.

Serafejo Complex
Located in central Athens, the Serafeio Complex serves as a municipal testbed for smart grid integration.

Genk Living Lab
Located in Genk, the Nieuw Texas Living Lab consists of 27 housing units being outfitted with smart control and monitoring infrastructure.
